According to the bible, Jesus functions in three roles.
He is the Prophet who makes God known through His person, teaching and work. He is our High Priest in that He alone stands before God as our mediator. Finally He is a King. Not just any king, but the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. He makes this clear as He is interrogated by a bias jury in the last hours before His divine appointment with the cross.
When member of the Sanhedrin (the Jewish religious version of the Supreme Court) ask Jesus to identify Himself as the Christ, Jesus answers them that He is the fulfillment of Daniel 7:13-14. He is the God-man who will rule and judge the nations of the earth! The irony of this scene is that while the religious council may be judging Jesus, He ultimately will judge them and all people. He is the Sovereign King of the Universe!
So what does this mean to us in our daily lives? At City on a Hill, we emphasize three relations we all have in common: our relationship with God through Jesus; our relationships with each other as followers of Jesus; and, our relationships with our neighbors who don’t yet know Jesus. The Kingship or preeminence of Jesus in all of life has significant bearing in each of these spheres. First, it means that the best and most accurate measurement of my growing relationship with God is the expanding preeminence of Jesus in my life. Second, the church has clear definition. The church is the people over whom Jesus is preeminent. Lastly, the gospel gains definition. The gospel, or good news, is the preeminence of Jesus through His perfect life, substitutionary death and bodily resurrection. It is through Jesus work alone in our lives that His preeminence takes form.
Key Application Questions
1) Over which area in my life is the preeminence of Jesus not evident?
2) How does the preeminence of Jesus over the church distinguish her from other groups and organizations?
3) How can we effectively communicate the preeminence of Jesus as the core of the gospel?
