Summary
Do ever feel like there is an internal war being waged in you? The Apostle Paul shares his experience of desiring to live a God-centered life while failing miserably. We gain insight regarding the dual natures that dwell within us a followers of Jesus through this passage.
This text is governed by two questions spelled out in verse 7 and 13. Each question revolves around the relationship of the law (the 613 commandments listed in the Old Testament) to sin and death. The Apostle Paul passionately defends the holy integrity of the law and places the blame on the power of sin that indwells all people.
In verses 15 through 25, the warring factions of who we are as new creations in Christ are unveiled. Two egos: one that delights in the the law of God and one that is captive to sin. Two laws: the law wanting to do what is right and the law of indwelling sin. Two expressions: thanks to Jesus for deliverance and agony over the miserable state of conflict and failure.
